Manatee Viewing Center Is Now Open
The 2017–2018 season is going to be another biggie. Last year the MVC celebrated its 30th anniversary and its 5 millionth visitor. This year, they’re keeping the festivities going.
What’s New This Year?
I chatted with Jamie Woodlee, the Senior Environmental Technician who oversees the Manatee Viewing Center.
Here’s what’s new at the MVC this year:
- Massively enlarged gathering porch in front of the gift shop
- Completely renovated 900′ tidal walk. It’s 3-5′ higher so visitors have an even better view over the water and of the manatees.
- Renovations and updates to some of the nature trails
I visited yesterday, opening day, and there are already loads of manatee and other creatures, including sharks and dolphin. The MVC reported 500+ visitors on this first day of the season!
Sting Ray Touch Tank
The sting ray touch tank, managed by the Florida Aquarium, is also open and already full of the beautiful rays. Visitors get up close and personal and can touch these beautiful creatures. Here’s a video from opening day November 1, 2017.
